When the British ruled India, then the capital of India was Kolkata. In the summer their Viceroy used to go to Shimla. After partition of Bengal in 1905, there was a feeling of emotions against the British. Now the British wanted to rule by making the capital far away from there. Lord Hardinge, who was a Viceroy of India at that time, sent a suggestion in London to Shimla in 1911 that India should be allowed to build Delhi. The reason behind this was also that in the olden times Delhi had been the capital of many kings. The distance in Delhi and Shimla was also less.
